We are delighted to share that Birch Hill Care Centre in Norham has once again been rated Outstanding overall by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Following an assessment carried out in March 2026, Birch Hill retained its Outstanding ratings for Effective and Well-led. Even better, Caring improved from Good to Outstanding, meaning the home is now rated Outstanding in three of the five CQC areas. Safe and Responsive were both rated Good.
That puts Birch Hill in a very small group. According to the CQC ratings dataset dated 1 October 2026, just 181 of 13,620 rated care homes in England had three of the five CQC areas rated Outstanding — around 1.3%, or roughly 1 in 75 homes.
For everyone at Birch Hill, this recognition means a great deal. Our team sees every day how much care, attention and commitment goes into supporting residents. To have that independently recognised by CQC is something we are extremely proud of.
Outstanding care that puts people first
One of the strongest themes in the CQC report is the way residents are treated as individuals.
Inspectors found that people were supported with kindness, dignity and respect. Staff understood residents’ individual needs, preferences and wishes, and the report highlighted a culture where staff see themselves as working in residents’ home rather than residents living in a workplace.
That approach can be seen in the small details as well as the larger aspects of care.
For example, the report describes how a member of staff helped a resident whose dress had torn before a family wedding. The staff member used their sewing skills to repair it so the resident could attend wearing the outfit she had chosen.
It may sound like a small gesture, but it reflects something important about life at Birch Hill. Good care is not only about practical support. It is also about understanding what matters to someone and doing what we can to help make those moments possible.
Helping residents achieve positive outcomes
Birch Hill also retained its Outstanding rating for Effective care.
CQC highlighted the home’s personalised approach, strong teamwork and close links with health professionals. Staff monitor residents’ health and wellbeing carefully so they can respond quickly when needs change.
The report includes several examples of how this approach can make a real difference.
In one case, Birch Hill’s visiting therapy dogs helped staff build trust with a resident who initially found personal care difficult. Their calming presence helped the resident become more comfortable with support and build stronger relationships with the care team.
In another case, a resident came to Birch Hill for end-of-life care. Through personalised support, good nutrition and encouragement to regain independence, their condition improved enough for them to return home.
Examples like these show what person-centred care can achieve when staff take time to understand the individual and adapt support around them.
A strong team and a strong culture
Birch Hill also retained its Outstanding rating for Well-led.
CQC recognised a positive culture where residents come first, staff feel supported and the home continues to learn and improve. Inspectors also highlighted the accessibility of the management team and the way Birch Hill works with residents, families and health professionals.
The report recognised the relationship between Birch Hill and Lenore Care too. Following the change of provider, Lenore Care took time to understand what was already working well at Birch Hill rather than simply imposing a different way of working. Investment has continued in the home while protecting the strong identity and culture that residents and families value.
That is an important part of our approach. Birch Hill already had an experienced team and a strong reputation. Our role is to support that team, invest in the service and help it continue to develop.
Proud of the whole Birch Hill team
This Outstanding rating reflects the contribution of everyone at Birch Hill.
Care staff may be the most visible part of daily life in the home, but great care depends on the whole team. Catering, housekeeping, maintenance, administration and management all play an important role in creating a safe, welcoming and comfortable home for residents.
We also know that an Outstanding rating does not mean there is nothing left to improve. The team will continue to listen, learn and look for ways to make life at Birch Hill even better.
For now, though, this is a moment worth celebrating.
The achievement has also attracted local attention, with the Northumberland Gazette reporting on the high praise given to Birch Hill following the assessment.
Most importantly, the CQC report reflects what we want residents and families to experience every day: a home where people feel safe, respected, listened to and genuinely cared for.
